Today, as I am in the process of preparing to take my American Lit mid-term (which I will have to do before the weekend), I got to spend the day with Ben Franklin. It’s rare that I read someone who I want so desperately to be like that I find myself jealous of their work.
And when it comes to Poor Richard, I find that here was a man who I really would love to even be in the same ball park with. His eloquence, his demeanor, his ability to make a point, and his down right nasty talent of saying really mean things in a really nice way… all sum up to a man who I think most of us should read more of.
If you want a good read, pick up his Rules By Which A Great Empire May Be Reduced. If that doesn’t have you shaking your head in laughter at how stupid the British monarchy was in its dealings with this little upstart colony that became America, it might open your eyes as to the mockery that we have become in just over 200 years.
Seriously though, if you get the chance, pick up some of his writings, it might open your eyes, it might make you laugh, it might make your life a bit better, or you just might realize it was him who said “God won’t give you more then you can handle” (nope, that’s not in the bible folks).
But, for now, it’s back to the book or a video game.. (but probably the book video game), because you got to hand it to Old Ben, he kind knew what he was talking about (or at least made it seem like he did).

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve never read any Ben Franklin. I’m sure he has some wise words for us we can learn from.

He had an insight that was a bit prolific. Much like Anne Rand or George Orwell, but a little less of a downer, as humour was his choice of dissemination.
